Spaghetti sauce recipe without canned tomato sauce
Last Updated on
There are a lot of different ways to make a good spaghetti sauce, but one of the quickest and simplest is to start with a can of tomato sauce. Canned tomato sauce is a great shortcut when you’re in a hurry, but sometimes you want a sauce that’s a little bit more homemade. This sauce is made without any canned tomato sauce, and it’s still super flavorful and easy to make.
The key to this sauce is in the balance of the flavors. You’ve got the sweetness from the tomatoes, the acidity from the vinegar, the earthiness from the oregano, and the heat from the red pepper flakes. All of these flavors come together to create a delicious, well-rounded sauce.
This sauce is also really versatile. You can use it on pasta, of course, but it would also be great on chicken or fish. And if you want to stretch it a little bit further, you could add some diced veggies to bulk it up.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 cups chopped fresh tomatoes
1/4 cup white vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Salt and pepper
Instructions:
Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute.
Add the fresh tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes.
Use an immersion blender to blend the sauce until smooth. Alternatively, you can transfer the sauce to a regular blender and blend until smooth.
Serve over pasta or use as desired
