Rice is an important part of the diet for children. It is easily digestible and nutritious. It is neutral and children like it in different forms. We started with porridge in the first feedings. In rice I prefer to use tip natural chips in organic quality. However, since a year we also serve our daughter arborio (risotto) or basmati rice, she also liked plain white rice. Sometimes I have to blend it properly, but since we discovered rice crisps, she likes the porridge very much. Now I’ve chosen a sweet recipe, I make it for breakfast. I only eat porridge in our household and our youngest daughter. So I make more for her in the morning. I often add an apple to the porridge, grated, stewed, fruit of various types. This porridge can alternate with millet, oats, quinoa or buckwheat. You can pour it with water, vegetable milk. Cow’s milk is quite difficult to digest for children under 3yrs. Some books do not recommend animal fats at all for children in this form. This porridge is sweet on its own, no need to sweeten it. Don’t teach children about sugar, they get enough of it in the form of polysaccharides such as bread and floury foods or fruit. When you do want to sweeten, choose things like maple syrup for its nutritional value, or coconut sugar for its low glycemic index.
1.
Wash the rice crispies, pour the juice of the orange and some water into a mug and add the flakes and cinnamon. Heat and boil over medium heat until soft.
2.
Don’t make the rice al dente for children, they need to digest it quickly – the little ones take longer to digest, but with chips the cooking will happen quickly.
3.
Remove the cooked porridge from the heat and stir in the grated apple. When the porridge has cooled to baby temperature, stir in the mashed banana with a fork. The banana oxidises quickly, so really only put it in just before eating.
