This recipe was baked for us by our beloved mum when we were little girls. My sister and I were always involved in its preparation and especially my younger sister always waited for a bowl and a ladle with leftover raw dough to evaluate its taste 😀 I have the best relationship with our mom that can be she is the strongest person in the world for me along with my sister. They both have serious health issues but still have endless energy and strength for life which I admire and am so proud of them both. This cake reminds me of the best moments we have spent together. The constant laughter and joy in our eyes and of course the incredible taste of the poppy seed slices that melted on the tongue 🙂 make sure you bake it at home too!! You won’t regret it !
1.
Sieve flour with baking powder on a board, cut in butter or margarine, add egg yolks, sugar, salt and knead the dough with milk and divide it into two parts.
2.
Roll out one part, place on a greased baking sheet, spread with fine plum jam, spread the poppy seed filling (progress below) evenly over it and cover with the other rolled out sheet of dough.
3.
Peat the pastry before baking and bake in a medium oven.
4.
Sprinkle the hot cake with icing sugar and cut into slices.
5.
Macao filling: Beat the butter with the sugar, add the ground poppy seeds, milk, flour mixed with baking powder and stiff whipped egg whites.
